C T Online Desk: The medical board overseeing the treatment of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi at Evercare Hospital has said his condition remains very critical, citing severe brain damage despite surgery.
In an official statement on Saturday, the board said Hadi is being managed conservatively in intensive care. While his kidney function has recovered, his overall condition remains extremely critical.
The board noted that injury to the brain stem has caused fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate, with blood pressure support ongoing. A medical team is on standby to insert a temporary pacemaker if necessary.
Hadi continues to require ventilator support, with preventive measures in place to avoid lung infection and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He also suffered lung injuries and still has a small amount of blood draining through a chest tube.
The board said the blood clotting disorder known as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) has improved significantly, though continuous monitoring and blood transfusions will continue as needed. Fluid balance management is also being maintained to preserve kidney recovery.
Earlier, Hadi sustained a severe brain injury and has been treated under a brain protection protocol, with all supportive measures continuing. A repeat CT scan may be performed if his condition stabilizes.
Following surgery on Friday night, Hadi was transferred from Dhaka Medical College Hospital to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital. The medical board expressed gratitude to doctors and staff from the One Stop Crisis Centre, radiology, ICU, anesthesia, neurosurgery, and other departments at Dhaka Medical College for their efforts.
The board also urged the public to refrain from speculation or spreading misinformation and to respect the patient’s privacy and dignity.
Hadi was shot at close range by two assailants on a motorcycle around 2:15pm Friday while travelling by rickshaw in Bijoy Nagar’s Box Culvert Road. The attackers fled the scene.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition before being transferred to Evercare Hospital. Dr Mostaq Ahmed, resident physician of the DMCH emergency department, said the bullet entered Hadi’s right side and exited through his left ear, leaving fragments in his brain.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the government announced a Tk50 lakh reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved. He added that the process of apprehending the suspects is ongoing and expressed hope that they would be caught soon with public cooperation.
