Indonesia flood dead toll reaches 631

C T Online Desk: Shakhawat Sabbir | Special Correspondent : The death toll from Indonesia’s worst floods in decades has climbed to 631, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Triggered by a rare cyclone over the Strait of Malacca, the disaster has affected 1.4 million people, while nearly 500 remain missing.

Aceh and West Sumatra are the hardest-hit provinces, where thousands are still without electricity and internet. Severely damaged roads and bridges have left many areas cut off, slowing rescue efforts.

BBC reports that Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka have also been hit by related floods and landslides, causing hundreds of deaths.

Survivors describe scenes of extreme devastation. Arini Amalia said the floodwaters felt “like a tsunami,” while residents in Central Tapanuli report dwindling food supplies and rising desperation.

Rescuers are traveling on foot and motorcycles to reach stranded communities as authorities warn the death toll may rise further amid continuing bad weather.
