C T Online Desk: Special Correspondent : After more than a week of demonstrations, teachers under the MPO-Included Education Nationalisation Alliance have called off their movement following a government decision to increase their house rent allowance by 15 percent in two phases.
The announcement was made on Tuesday (October 21) at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka by Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, president of the alliance and member secretary of the Bangladesh Madrasa Teachers and Employees Forum.
“Our major demand has been fulfilled — this is a big victory for us,” Azizi told reporters. “We are ending our protest and returning to classrooms from tomorrow. We are going home with the government’s gazette in hand.”
According to the Finance Division, the interim government has approved a 7.5 percent house rent increase (minimum Tk 2,000) effective November 1, 2025, and another 7.5 percent from July 2026, raising the total to 15 percent. The approval comes with several conditions, officials confirmed.
Azizi added that teachers will make up for the eight class days lost during the protest by keeping schools open on Saturdays until the annual exams.
He expressed gratitude to leaders of BNP, Jamaat, NCP, and other political groups for their moral support during the movement, saying, “We protested for a just cause, and the government has responded positively. This success belongs to all teachers.”
The teachers’ alliance had been demanding nationalisation of MPO-listed institutions and improved allowances. While the broader nationalisation issue remains under discussion, the latest concession marks a significant breakthrough in ongoing talks between educators and the government.
