C T Online Desk: Shakhawat Hossain Sabbir, Special Correspondent : Dhaka, Oct 13: Teachers from MPO-listed (Monthly Pay Order) educational institutions have announced a new phase of their movement, declaring a ‘March to Secretariat’ programme for Tuesday, demanding an increase in house rent and medical allowances.
The announcement was made on Monday at the Central Shaheed Minar by Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the MPO-listed Education Nationalisation Expectant Alliance.
Azizi said the teachers will continue their ongoing work abstention if the government fails to issue a circular or make any announcement by tonight. “If there is no response, the teachers’ long march and work abstention will continue,” he added.
Meanwhile, the indefinite work abstention that began today in MPO-listed educational institutions across the country will also continue, the teachers’ platform confirmed. In protest of recent attacks on teachers, demonstrators have been holding a sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar.
The protesting teachers vowed to carry on their movement until their “legitimate demands” are met, warning that the agitation will intensify if the government delays in taking action.
Earlier on Sunday, from a demonstration in front of the National Press Club, the teachers had issued an ultimatum to publish a government circular by Monday. However, following a police crackdown on that protest, they advanced their new programme and announced it immediately.
