Shibir sweeps elections to 23 out of 28 central posts

C T Online Desk: Islami Chhatra Shibir claimed 23 out of the 28 posts in the DUCSU elections with landslide victories over other candidates.

In the 38th central student union elections, Shibir has won the vice president post, 11 of the 14 secretary posts, and 11 of the 13 membership posts.

Independent candidates claimed the remaining three secretary posts, and one membership post. The other membership post went to Hema Chakma, the candidate from a seven-group leftist alliance named “Pratirodh Parshad.”

On Tuesday, elections were also held for 13 posts in each of the 18 student dormitories.

Shibir Central Committee’s Publication Secretary Abu Shadik Kayem secured the DUCSU vice president post, beating his nearest rival, Chhatra Dal candidate Abidul Islam Khan, on a massive 60% margin.

Shadik Kayem’s pivotal behind-the-scenes role in leading last year’s anti-fascist uprising likely brightened his appeal among the student voters.

Shibir’s Dhaka University unit President SM Farhad won the general secretary post, and another Shibir leader Mohiuddin Khan won the assistant general secretary post on similar margins. Chhatra Dal candidates were second runners-up in all the three top posts in the central union elections.

Shibir’s list of winners reflected the group’s egalitarian claims.

Shibir’s winners included two women in secretary posts, and three women in membership posts. Ethnic minority community member Sarva Mitra Chakma also won a membership post under the Shibir-led panel.

Shibir’s winners also include a married couple studying at the English department. Umme Salma won the reading room, and cafeteria secretary post, while her husband Raihan Uddin won a membership post.
