C T Online Desk: Sarwar Jahan Jewel Mymensingh : The Town Hall square in Mymensingh city has been declared ‘July Square’. Divisional Commissioner Mokhtar Ahmed inaugurated the square at the Town Hall intersection area by releasing balloons around 11 am on Monday.
The town hall was established in 1884 near the Circuit House grounds near the Brahmaputra River. On the road from the Mymensingh-Tangail road junction to the batting cage of Zainul Udyan and the entrance to the Circuit House, there is a round square with murals of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin. The junction is quite popular for political meetings. Last year, an anti-discrimination student movement was held around this area.
Separate signboards on both sides of the tarmac read “July Square” and “July Square” on the round part. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by the Superintendent of Police, leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, and members of the families of the martyrs. At the beginning of the inauguration, a moment of silence was observed and prayers were offered in memory of the martyrs.
Divisional Commissioner Mokhtar Ahmed said, ‘The July Movement started from this place. Therefore, we are declaring it as July Square. July Square will be our place of consciousness and power from now on. If any evil force rises, we will suppress it from July Square. We will not be able to repay the debt of those who sacrificed their lives.
Mahmudul Hasan, a July protester and NCP district committee member, said that the matter of declaring the historic Town Hall Square as July Square needed to be done in a more planned manner. There are murals of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin here. More work could have been done at Shaheed Sagar Square in the old Trishal bus stand area of the city. Nothing should be done that ruins or questions the July spirit.
In this regard, Deputy Commissioner Mufidul Alam said, the anti-discrimination student movement started from the Town Hall intersection. In view of the students’ demands, it has been declared July Square. However, no structural changes will be made. And a place has been decided in the Dhaka Bypass area for the July Monument.
