‘We must remain patient as announcing polls schedule solely EC’s responsibility’

C T Online Desk: It is the Election Commission (EC), not the government, that is responsible for announcing the schedule of the upcoming general election, Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury, a standing committee member of BNP, said on Tuesday.

“We must remain patient for the election schedule, as it is the responsibility of the Election Commission, not the government,” he responded to a query from a journalist while addressing a press conference held at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka this noon.

Earlier on 13 June, a meeting was held between Chief Adviser Prof Mohammed Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London and they reached a consensus to hold the national election before a week of Ramadan to be observed in February next year.

But the Yunus-Tarique meeting did not fix any specific timeline for the election, which created a smoke screen on the political horizon in Bangladesh.
