C T Online Desk: A Dhaka court today granted bail to popular actor Nusraat Faria in an attempted murder case tied to the July uprising.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after hearing her bail petition, Nusraat lawyer Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain told The Daily Star.
Yesterday, she was sent to jail in connection with the case.
In the bail order, the judge said the bail was granted to Nusraat Faria as the investigating officer submitted a report informing the court that the accused was not inside the country during the incident. She was outside the country (in Canada) from July 9 to August 14 last year, the report said.
Although the charges mentioned in the FIR are nonbailable, it is not possible to determine the allegations brought against the accused without the police report.
After detention at the airport on May 18, the actor was in jail custody and the case is now under investigation.
Under these circumstances, considering all aspects, the court granted bail to the accused on a bond of Tk 5,000, under the custody of her appointed lawyer and one local person, until the police report is submitted.
The arrest of Nusraat has drawn widespread criticism from artistes and cultural figures, especially those who were vocal during the July uprising.
The actor was escorted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka amid tight security around 10:00am yesterday, a day after she was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport before boarding a flight.
On March 27 this year, one Enamul Haque, who suffered bullet injuries on July 19 last year during the protests in Bhatara, filed the case with the court against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, 17 actors, and 265 others.
On April 29, the officer-in-charge of Bhatara Police Station registered it as a First Information Report in line with the court’s directive.
