BNP stresses national unity, urges interim govt to maintain neutrality

C T Online Desk: Stating that there is no alternative to preserving the anti-fascist national unity, the BNP on Saturday urged the interim government to uphold the highest level of impartiality so that no quarter can make undue political gains.

The BNP asserts that the democratic character of the state and the reflection of people’s ownership are realized through an elected parliament and public representatives but finds that the recommendations of the Constitution and Electoral System Reform Commission appear to marginalize politicians and create opportunities for unelected individuals to govern the country.

The stance was presented by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press conference held on Saturday, at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka.

The BNP believes: “Various reforms and constitutional amendments should be formulated while taking into account the democratic traditions, customs, culture, and religious values of the people.”

The BNP’s standing committee organized the press conference to outline its position on the recommendations and spreadsheets of the National Consensus Commission.

Although BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, was expected to be present virtually, he did not appear on the screen.

Earlier on Saturday morning, a high-level BNP source indicated that he would attend.

In response to a question about Tarique Rahman’s return to the country, Mirza Fakhrul said that “he will return at the appropriate time.”

Mirza Fakhrul further said: “The highest priority at present is to uphold anti-fascist national unity and establish an egalitarian state and social system in accordance with the dreams and aspirations of the martyrs of the July mass uprising and the 16-year-long anti-fascist democratic movement.

“All our reform efforts will be directed towards establishing a strong democratic political government based on broader national consensus. This is the national expectation.”
