“Those who talk about ‘minus-two’ are indulging in wishful thinking. That expectation will never be fulfilled,” he remarked while responding to reporters’ questions after paying tribute at the grave of late president Ziaur Rahman in the capital.
Khasru, accompanied by several BNP leaders and activists, including those who could not return to Bangladesh during the 16-year Awami League regime, laid wreaths at Ziaur Rahman’s grave.
The BNP Standing Committee member dismissed the “minus-two” narrative as a baseless attempt at depoliticisation, asserting that it would not succeed in destroying the BNP. “If someone propagates such fabricated ideas about depoliticisation or ‘minus-two,’ it’s their problem,” he said.
Khasru emphasized that the BNP is currently the most popular political party in Bangladesh, with Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman standing as the two most admired leaders.
Recalling historical attempts to dismantle the BNP, including during the regimes of HM Ershad and the one-eleven government, Khasru pointed out that such efforts had failed. “The BNP is now stronger than ever before. It cannot be eradicated,” he added.
Highlighting the importance of democracy, Khasru stressed the need for immediate electoral reforms.
“Democracy must be restored in Bangladesh. The first step towards this is holding free and fair elections. The movement for democratic reforms must begin with this electoral process,” he said.
