C T Online Desk: Due to heavy fog and multiple road accidents, a long traffic jam has formed on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Friday.
Drivers and passengers have been stuck in traffic for hours, facing immense inconvenience.
It is reported that the traffic jam stretches over a 14-km area from the Meghna-Gomti Bridge area to Dhitpur.
According to the Daudkandi Highway Police and drivers, a cargo van lost control and overturned in the Kanra area of Daudkandi Upazila in the early hours of Friday.
As a result, traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane was blocked.
At the same time, two trucks collided in Dhitpur, Daudkandi, also blocking the Dhaka-bound lane.
Consequently, drivers headed towards Dhaka tried to use the opposite lane, which is for Chittagong-bound vehicles.
During this, a passenger bus heading to Dhaka broke down when its gear got stuck, further blocking both the Dhaka and Chittagong-bound lanes.
The Highway Police said that by 8am the wrecked bus and cargo van were moved to one lane using a wrecker.
As a result, after 8am, vehicles started moving on two lanes instead of four on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
However, the traffic jam continued until around 11am in the 14-kilometer stretch.
At 9am, a driver of a cargo van, Kawser, who was stuck in traffic in Pennai area, said: “It took me five hours to cover 10 kilometers of the highway.”
Kausar Alam, the driver of a Tisha Paribahan bus, mentioned that he had been stuck in traffic for three and a half hours due to the heavy fog and road accidents.
Daudkandi Highway Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Faisal said: “We have opened two lanes for traffic from four. The recovery of the broken-down vehicles will be attempted before noon.”
