Gono Odhikar Parishad leader Faruk assaulted at Shaheed Minar

C T Online Desk: A group of young men assaulted Gono Odhikar Parishad Senior Vice-President Faruk Hasan at a programme held at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.

Faruk was beaten up allegedly for his speech criticising the interim government. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

The National Revolutionary Council organised a rally of citizens at Shaheed Minar, demanding the trial of murders that occurred particularly during the July uprising, and the formation of a revolutionary government under the leadership of Prof Muhammad Yunus.

Faruk was addressing the event as a special guest.

In his speech, the Gono Odhikar Parishad leader said they wanted a revolutionary government by throwing away Sheikh Hasina’s constitution. “We did not want an interim government.”

Those who held a meeting with the army chief on 5 August were involved in deterring the formation of a revolutionary government, he said.

After Faruk was taken to the emergency department at DMCH, he said activists of the Chhatra Dal were present at the spot. “Although my speech was correct, Chhatra Dal men attacked me suddenly. They snatched my mobile phone and wallet.”

However, Gono Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan denied the claim, saying the National Revolutionary Council activists attacked Faruk.

The council’s member secretary, Hasan Md Arif said they do not know who the attackers were.
