Sarjis: Jobs will be based on merit, regardless of ideology

C T Online Desk: Sarjis Alam, general secretary of July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, has said that jobs should be based on merit, irrespective of political ideology, and that securing a government job is a constitutional right for individuals not involved in past abuse of power, injustice, or crime, while condemning unjust excuses that undermine this right.

He made these remarks on his verified Facebook profile on Saturday, discussing the re-verification process of the 43rd BCS, where 168 candidates were disqualified in this step.

He said that most of the disqualifications were based on negative intelligence reports, often related to political backgrounds.

Sarjis Alam questioned the consistency of the process, pointing out that during the Awami League era, obtaining a top-class government job was difficult for anyone outside the Awami League family.

He raised concerns about the present situation, asking why candidates should be denied jobs because of their family’s political affiliations.

He argued that an individual’s political views should not determine their eligibility for a job, and that a person’s family background should not influence their career opportunities.

He criticized the practice of asking political leaders at the union and ward levels about the political background of candidates, undermining the merit-based system.

He also highlighted the case of a BCS examinee named Zakaria, who had excellent academic achievements but was disqualified in the re-verification process.

Alam expressed disappointment over this, mentioning that such practices could lead future job seekers to lose trust in the system.

He warned that the current verification process could lead to frustration among the upcoming generation of job aspirants, and if this trend continues, many may choose to leave the country in search of better opportunities.
