Police deployed in Mohakhali amid Titumir College protests

C T Online Desk: In response to the protests by students of Government Titumir College in the capital demanding university status for their institution, a large number of law enforcement officers have been deployed in and around the college as well as the Mohakhali area to prevent any potential disturbances.

This heavy presence was also seen around areas such as Railgate, Amtali, and surrounding locations since Tuesday morning.

Regarding the situation, Mohammad Ziaul Haque, additional police commissioner of the Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said: “To prevent any disorder, multiple forces have been deployed around the college. We want to ensure that no chaos arises around their protest. We have increased security across the Mohakhali area and will act according to our instructions.”

Earlier on Monday, around 11:30am, students marched from the college campus and blocked both the road and railway tracks at Mohakhali Rail Crossing. The blockade continued until 4pm.

After briefly lifting the blockade, they returned and sat on the road in front of the college and boycotted all classes and exams.

The students of Titumir College are making the following three demands for university status:

The affiliation with Dhaka University should be revoked, and Titumir College should be separated from the seven colleges.
A commission should be formed to transform Titumir College into a university.
A roadmap should be created to establish Titumir College as an independent university.
