C T Online Desk: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said that appointing advisers in the interim government is Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus’s prerogative, and the BNP holds no position on the matter.
Responding to questions about recent protests by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement over the appointment of three advisers, Fakhrul described the chief adviser as a “wise and capable individual,” while talking with local journalists at his Thakurgaon residence in Kalibari.
“The BNP’s only advice is for the appointments to remain non-controversial and free from bias. We trust they will address any missteps if they arise.”
“Essential goods are becoming unaffordable for many people,” he said, urging the interim government to prioritize economic reform alongside political changes.
“The government must take necessary measures to curb inflation and stabilize the economy.”
Rejecting a proposal for proportional representation, he said the BNP rejects this proposal in its entirety.
“The 17 years of challenges left by the previous regime cannot be resolved in a few months. Patience is essential, and the interim government should be given time to address these issues,” the BNP leader added.
Fakhrul said the next parliament, formed through a fair election, would handle extensive reforms, while the interim government’s primary responsibility should be to ensure an environment for free and peaceful elections.
Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul laid the foundation stone for BNP’s Thakurgaon district office.
According to BNP sources, Awami League and Jubo League activists allegedly set the office ablaze in early August at the height of the July mass uprising.
