Ctg division faces immediate flood risk

C T Online Desk: The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Water Development Board has warned of potential floods in the districts under Chattogram division as water levels of rivers of this region could swell up in the next two days.

The low-lying areas of the districts, including Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Khagrachari, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, and Laxmipur, may witness flooding,  the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said in a bulletin on Friday.

The rise in water levels is linked to ongoing heavy rainfall in Bangladesh as well as upstream regions.

While the water levels of the Muhuri, Feni, and Gomti rivers in were currently decreasing, the waters of the Halda, Sangu, and Matamuhuri rivers were increasing.

Meanwhile, weather forecast agencies reported that a well-marked low-pressure area exists over the Northeast Bay of Bengal near Southeast Bangladesh, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to coastal areas over the next two days.

This might result in rising water levels in the rivers of the Barishal and Khulna divisions during this period.

In contrast, the water levels of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers were now receding and are expected to continue decreasing over the next five days, likely flowing below the danger level.

Similarly, the Ganga-Padma river’s water levels were decreasing, expected to remain steady for the next three days, and might may below the danger level within the next two days.

The Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers in the Rangpur division were experiencing a steady trend, with water levels expected to slowly decrease over the next three days, likely flowing below the danger level.

Finally, in the Sylhet division, the water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers were now decreasing, and other major rivers like the Manu, Khowai, Sarigowain, and Dhalai remained stable.

This trend is expected to continue for the next three days, with water levels likely to stay below the danger level.
