Bangladesh score 42/0, chasing 185 to win second Test, series

C T Online Desk: Bangladesh openers Zakir Hossian and Shadman Islam started to chase 185 runs confidently as they scored 42 runs in seven overs against Pakistan before bad light stopped play in Rawalpindi.

Zakir hit a rapid 31 off 23 balls while Shadman was unbeaten on 9 off 19 as Bangladesh are close to win the second Test as well as the series against the hosts if they keep the momentum.

Bangladesh right-arm pacers Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana shared nine wickets as Pakistan were all out for 172 in their second innings of the second and final Test match.

The Tigers, who lead the series 1-0, began to chase 185 runs for victory and a historic series win against their Asian rivals.

Hasan, playing his third Test, bagged his maiden five-wicket haul while Nahid, also featuring in his third Test, took four as Pakistan batting came unstuck on the fourth and penultimate day.

Pakistan, who resumed the day on a precarious 9/2, fell into further trouble in the morning session in the face of some inspired fast bowling by the 21-year old Nahid.

Fellow right-arm paceman Taskin Ahmed struck first, removing overnight batter Saim Ayub (20), before Nahid began his demolition act.

Nahid got rid of captain Shan Masood (28), Babar Azam (11) and Saud Shakeel (two) with the trio all edging behind either to the wicket-keeper or the slip cordon.

Pakistan could have slipped into further disarray had Mohammad Rizwan (43) not been dropped by first slip fielder Shadman Islam off the bowling of Nahid before he even opened his account.

Salman Agha (47 not out) alongside Rizwan went into the lunch break with Pakistan on 117/6, a lead of 129.

In the afternoon session, it was 24-year old Hasan’s turn to trouble the Pakistan batters as dangerman Rizwan was out caught behind and Mohammad Ali departed without troubling the scorers.

Nahid then dismissed Abrar Ahmed (two) before Hasan sent back Mir Hamza (four) to bring an end to the Pakistan innings.

The hosts were earlier dismissed for 274 in their first innings after a five-for from Mehedi Hasan Miraz before the Tigers replied with 262, thanks to a 165-run seventh-wicket stand between Liton Das (138) and Miraz (78).
