Non-Cooperation Movement : Death toll rises to 65 as clashes erupt countrywide

C T Online Desk: At least 65 people were killed and numerous others injured in a series of deadly clashes that broke out in several parts of the country on Sunday centred on the non-cooperation movement under the banner of Students Against Discrimination.

In Narsigndi, six people including leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies were killed, and four protesters were injured by gunfire during a clash at Madhabdi Bus Stand in Narsingdi Sadar upazila, reports UNB.

The deceased were Delwar Hossain (Chardigoldi union parishad chairman), Delwar (local Jubo League leader), Moniruzzaman Bhuiya alias Nati Monir (Sramik League leader), Anisur Rahman Sohel (Sramik League leader) and Nousher (ward 11 commissioner of Madhabdi municipality). The identity of the sixth deceased remains unknown.

In Bhola, three people were killed during a clash between protestors and members of the Chhatra League and police in the afternoon. Over a hundred people, including police officers, were injured in the clashes that took place from 10amto 2pm. The BNP claimed that two of its activists had been shot dead, while the district Awami League president alleged that a member of Jubo League had been beaten to death by protesters.

In Joypurhat, a person named Mehedi Hasan was shot dead during clashes.

In Barisal, the Karim Kuthir and Chaumatha areas of the city turned into a battlefield during clashes between students and members of the Chhatra League and Awami League. An Awami League leader was killed in the clashes. The deceased, Tutul Chowdhury, was the former president of the Awami League’s Ward 12 in the city. At least 20 others were injured during the violence.

In Sylhet, two persons were killed following a clash involving police, Chhatra League members and student protesters in Golapgong.

The deceased were Taj Uddin, 35, a betel nut seller, and Sunny Ahmed, 18.

In Kishoreganj, a clash erupted between protesters and members of the Awami League, including leaders and activists of the Chhatra League, on Station Road, which left three people dead.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

In Munshiganj, at least two people have been killed and 30 others injured in a clash between protestors and Awami League men.

In Rangpur, four Awami League men were killed, and over 100 people were injured in a clash between protesters and Awami League activists.

In Pabna, three students were shot dead by the ruling party activists and 50 others injured in a clash between protesters and Awami League activists in Pabna district town on Sunday, said police.

The deceased were identified as Zahid Islam, 19, Mahbubul Hossain, 16 and Fahim, 17.

Masud Alam, additional superintendent of Pabna police, said a group of students of Pabna Government Edward College brought out a procession from their campus in the afternoon and were staging demonstrations peacefully at Abdul Hamid Road JB intersection as part of their scheduled non-cooperation movement.

In Sirajganj, at least four people were killed and many injured in a series of clashes between protesters, Awami League activists and police in Sirajganj amidst the ongoing non-cooperation called by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Moreover, the district saw extensive destruction, vandalism and arson including on police stations and houses of two lawmakers.

In Bogra, four people were shot dead during protests throughout the day. Dr Abdul Wadud, deputy director of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, confirmed the deaths of three individuals, while an on-duty doctor at the private Swadesh Hospital confirmed the fourth death. One of the deceased was Monirul Islam, 22, from Kahalu upazila.

In Magura, two people were killed, including a Chhatra Dal leader, were killed in clashes.

In Comilla, a Jubo Dal activist was killed, and 15 people, including three children, were injured during a clash between Awami League and protesters in Debidwar of Comilla. In a separate incident, a police constable was beaten to death by a mob near Eliotganj highway police outpost.

In Dhaka, a student was shot dead in a clash in the Jigatala area of Dhanmondi in the capital. His name was Abdullah Siddiqui, 23. He was a student of Habibullah Bahar Degree College in the capital. Another man was reportedly shot dead amid a clash between protesters and Awami League leaders and activists in Ashulia of Savar.

Over 200 students were injured in a clash between Awami League activists and demonstrators at Mirpur 10, resulting in one fatality.

The deceased, identified as Md Miraj Hossain, was reportedly 22 to 23 years old, according to his brother-in-law Md Ferdous Alam. Miraj was a bus driver for Alif Paribahan and was shot while observing the protest.

In Feni, five people have been killed, and over 30 people were injured in a clash between police, Awami League activists and students. The clash took place at Mohipal in the district on Sunday afternoon.
