Holy Ashura being observed

C T Online Desk: Today is the 10th day of the month of Muharram in Hijri calendar 1446.

The holy Ashura is being observed across the country today with due religious fervour and solemnity, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Today is the 10th day of the month of Muharram in Hijri calendar 1446. Muslims across the world recall the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) along with his family members and 72 followers, who embraced martyrdom in 680 AD for establishing truth and justice in the fight with soldiers of Yazid on Karbala Maidan on the banks of the Euphrates River in Iraq.

Their self-sacrifice at Karbala Maidan to uphold the great ideals of Islam, the religion of peace and harmony, is a shining example in the history of humanity.

President Mohammed Shahbuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of Ashura, paying deep respect to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and other martyrs of Karbala.

The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh.

Different religious organisations have chalked out various programmes marking the occasion. Special prayers and discussions highlighting the significance of Ashura will be held at mosques.
Islamic Foundation will arrange a special milad mahfil at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on today on the occasion.

Shia community members will bring out a Tajia procession in the city on the day. The Tajia procession will start from Imambara Husaini Dallan in Old Dhaka and it will be surrounded by law enforcers.

However, no pike can take part in the mourning procession this time. Besides, police have banned carrying lethal weapons like metal weapons, knife, sword and other sharp weapons during the Tajia procession.

Adequate security measures have been taken around Imambara Husaini Dalan to ensure smooth observance of Ashura.

Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and FM radio stations and private TV channels will air special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
