C T Online Desk: Students of Chittagong University (CU) and its affiliated colleges have been staging demonstration at Sholoshahar railway station in Chittagong city demanding reform of quota system in government jobs.
Students started protesting from 3:30pm on Monday. Students gather there with a procession.
Sholoshahar railway station area has become tumultuous with the slogans of students.
As per the previous announcement, the protest program was supposed to be held at Sholoshahar station premises from 3pm. The agitating students were supposed to reach Sholoshahar station at 3pm by shuttle train from the Chittagong University campus.
However, the key was taken away from the driver before the train left.
Because of this, the Chittagong city-bound shuttle train could not leave the Chittagong University campus station at 2pm.
Sholoshahar Junction Station Master Zainal Abedin told Bangla Tribune: “The shuttle train was supposed to leave for the city from Chittagong University Station at 2pm. Before that, someone snatched the train key from the driver. Because of this, the train could not be left on time. It is not possible to say when it will leave. The train was supposed to reach Sholoshahar station at 3pm.”
The protestors complained that the leaders and activists of the Chhatra League snatched the key of the train to stop the anti-quota movement. Due to this, the train could not leave the campus on time.
Mohammad Russell Ahmed, the coordinator of the students’ platform “anti-discrimination student movement” at CU, who are agitating for the quota reform, said: “To suppress our movement, the Chhatra League is resorting to various misdeeds. Our demand remains singular: government jobs should be appointed based on merit, not quotas.”
