C T Online Desk: Information and broadcasting minister Hasan Mahmud on Saturday said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party did not like the development of Bangladesh.
He made the remark in an award-giving ceremony organised by Television Reporters’ Unity of Bangladesh at the Dhaka Club at Shahbagh in Dhaka.
Hasan, also the joint general secretary of the Awami League, added that the per capita income of Bangladeshis had increased from $600 to $2,600 in last 13 years under the leadership of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Different international organisations including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank also acknowledged the matter, he said.
As a result, he said, the buying capacity of the country’s citizens had increased manifold along with the size of the Gross Domestic Product.
The minister also said that though international organisations had acknowledged the economic development of Bangladesh, the BNP didn’t like it because they wanted the Bangladeshi people to remain poor.
Replying to a statement made by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir that the AL fears a caretaker government, Hasan replied, ‘As per the constitution, there is no possibility of forming a caretaker government during the national elections. The next general election will be held under the current election commission and it’ll be the AL which will play the role of a caretaker government or a poll-time government’.
The award-giving event was presided over by Television Reporter’s Unity president Salam Mahmud. National Press Club president Farida Yasmin also spoke at the event as the special guest.
