C T Online Desk: Waters of the rivers of the Sylhet region have again swollen due to the heavy rainfall and onrush of upstream waters, submerging parts of the districts of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj.
Waters of the Surma, Kushiyara and Shari-Goyain rivers were above the danger level in at least six points, causing flooding in the region for the third time this year with hundreds of thousands of people marooned.
Meanwhile, two women and a child went missing after a boat capsized in the River Surma in Dowarabazar area of Sunamganj.
Confirming the matter, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Neher Negar Tonu of Dowarabazar upazila said the incident took place in Azampur village of the upazila on Tuesday morning.
The small boat sank as there was a strong current on the river, she told the media.
According to the Sylhet Water Development Board (WDB), the water of the Surma was above 118 centimetres (cm) of danger limit at Kanaighat point at 9am on Tuesday.
Besides, the Kushiyara was above 71 cm, 22 cm and 93 cm of danger level at Amalsid point, Fenchuganj point and Sheola point, respectively, while the Shari-Goyain was above 10 cm of danger limit at Gowainghat point.
Also, the Surma was close to reach the danger level at Sylhet point, with the water flowing at 189 cm, one centimetre below the danger ceiling.
The ongoing flood situation in the low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona districts may deteriorate slightly in 24 hours commencing 9am on Tuesday, according to the Flood Forecasting Warning Centre (FFWC).
Besides, the water level of Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers in the south-eastern region may rise in particular time and may flow close to the danger level during this period, it said.
The major rivers in the North-eastern region of the country are in rising trend which may continue in the next 24 hours while the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are in rising trend, which may continue in next 72 hours.
The Ganges-Padma Rivers are in a rising trend, which may continue in next 24 hours. However, the flood situation may remain steady in Moulvibazar district.
The water levels may cross the corresponding danger level for a short duration in the next 24 hours.
