HSC students brave rain to reach exam centres

C T Online Desk: Due to heavy rain since morning, the examinees of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent exams, have suffered immensely.

It was seen the students and their guardians were rushing to the examination centres with umbrellas as they had to be present in the halls by 9:30am.

However, due to the rain, traffic congestion, and a shortage of vehicles, many were forced to walk to their destinations.

Outside the examination centers, students were seen making last-minute preparations under umbrellas. Many were also seen drenched in rain.

The government earlier postponed the exams in the Sylhet division until July 8 due to flooding. The schedule for the postponed exams, initially set for July 9, will be announced later.

Last year, the HSC and equivalent exams for three boards were delayed by 10 days due to heavy rains and floods.

In 2022, the exams were also postponed until November because of floods. Traditionally, HSC and equivalent exams begin in April, but the schedule has been disrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the education boards are now planning to resume holding the exams in April next year.

Officials of the education boards think that the rainy season in Bangladesh is from June to July, which is not an appropriate time to take public examinations.

In this regard, Professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar, chairman of the Dhaka Education Board, confirmed they are planning to start HSC exams in April again.

This year, a total of 14,50,790 students from nine general Education Boards, Madrasha Board, and Technical Board are expected to sit for the exams from 9,463 educational institutions at 2,275 centres across the country, according to authorities.

Among them, 11, 28,281 students are supposed to appear from nine general boards, 88,076 from the Madrasha Board and 2, 34,433 from the Technical Board respectively.

Some 281 students will appear for the examination from eight overseas centres.
