Authorities to ensure safe, relaxed Eid travel

C T Online Desk: The authorities concerned will take all types of measures on the roads and highways ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha to make the upcoming Eid journey relaxed and safe.

“Everyone has to take the responsibility of ensuring a happy and comfortable journey. We have to make sure that none of us participates in the risky Eid journey so that we can travel and return with peace and joy,” said Highway Police Additional Inspector General Shahabuddin Khan on Sunday.

He hoped that the homebound people would enjoy a comfortable journey.

The Highway Police chief said these at a discussion meeting organised at Rajarbagh Police Auditorium to keep the highway safe and traffic-jam-free on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

Shahabuddin Khan said that the Highway Police would be strict on several issues during the Eid journey. One of them is controlling the speed of vehicles and stopping the risky journey. Overspeeding of vehicles will be strictly controlled this time. Action will be taken if any vehicle exceeds the prescribed speed limit.

Addressing the transport owners and labour leaders, he said that no risky journey would be accepted during Eid. “Do not carry passengers in vehicles where there are risks involved. A request to commuters is not to get on the roof of buses and trains and engines of trains.”

The Highway Police chief also said, “We do petrol duty with motorcycles on Eid trips and build watchtowers. In Dhaka, sub-control rooms will be installed at important points on the highway. Efforts will be made immediately to remove and repair vehicles that break down.”

Pointing out that the Highway Police is working with technical assistance to increase efficiency, he said, “The Dhaka-Chattogram highway has been brought under the full coverage of CCTV cameras. As many as 1,427 CCTV cameras have been installed. Constant surveillance is being maintained. Besides, CCTV cameras are being installed under the management of the police all over the country. To ensure accountability, body cameras are being provided for Highway Police personnel. The use of technology has been increased to enhance the quality of service.”

Stating that drones will be used to search for traffic jams, jams and broken down vehicles, he said there is a big problem in Dhaka, Gazipur, and Savar due to the garment holidays before Eid. “We will try our best this time to have a look at the traffic movement on the roads with drone cameras.”

Factories should arrange transportation and vehicles so that the garment workers can go home comfortably during Eid. In this case, industrial police, factory authorities, owners and workers all have to be cooperative, he added.

In the discussion, leaders of the transport owner’s association and transport workers’ association were also present.
