Nor’wester: 30 salt-laden boats capsized in the sea, 70 go missing

C T Online Desk: Some 70 boatmen and workers went missing after some 30 salt-laden boats capsized at different points of the Bay of Bengal following a nor’wester on Wednesday morning.

Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard and River Police rescued some 34 of the boatmen and workers from the areas till filing the report around 7:30 pm on Wednesday.

Sources said the nor’wester started at around 8:20 am capsizing the boats at Sangu estuary, Uthan Majhir Ghat, Baro Awlia Ghat and Dobashi Bazar Ghat under Moheshkhali, Banshkhali and Anwara upazilas of Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram districts.

Many of the boatmen and workers of the boats jumped into the sea to save their lives at that time.

On information, members of the Coast Guard and River Police rushed to the spots and rescued 34 of the sinking boatmen and workers, said Superintendent of Police AFM Nizam Uddin of the Rover Police Chattogram Region.

Some 70 boatmen and workers remained missing till Wednesday evening, said Nizam adding that the rescue operation was going on.

He also informed that the rescued people were handed over to their respective families after bringing to Patenga in Chattogram city.
