Weather forecast: Cyclone warning in April, temperature may rise to 42°C

C T Online Desk: Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast the possible development of one to two low-pressure areas in the Bay of Bengal during April. There’s a likelihood that one of these depressions may intensify, potentially forming into a cyclone.

Additionally, the department has warned of severe thunderstorms lasting one to three days.

This long-term forecast for April was released by the Meteorological Department on Monday.

The forecast indicates that the country may experience below-normal rainfall for the month, with occasional light to moderate monsoon showers accompanied by scattered hail or thunderstorms expected for five to seven days.

During April, the country may also encounter two to four episodes of mild (36-37.9°C) to moderate (38-39.9°C) heatwaves, with one to two instances of severe (40-41.9°C) to extreme (42°C or above) temperatures.

Daytime temperatures are predicted to be above normal, while night-time temperatures are expected to remain normal.

Heavy rains in the north-eastern region and its upstream areas could lead to rapid rises in river water levels, possibly resulting in flash flood situations.

Over the past 24 hours, Rajshahi recorded the highest temperature at 37.2°C, while Dhaka saw a rise to 32.8°C. Other divisional cities experienced varying temperatures, with Rangpur at 33.7°C, Mymensingh at 31.1°C, Sylhet at 29.7°C, Chittagong at 32.9°C, Khulna at 34.8°C, and Barisal at 34°C.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department reported on Monday that a western low-pressure system is prevailing over West Bengal and nearby regions, while a seasonal normal low-pressure system is situated over the South Bay of Bengal.

Over the next 24 hours starting from 6pm on Monday, temporary gusts of wind or rain with thunder are expected in two locations in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, with scattered hail possible in some areas. The rest of the country is anticipated to experience mainly dry weather with partly cloudy skies.

During this period, mild to moderate heat is likely over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barisal divisions, along with Nilphamari and Dinajpur districts, potentially causing discomfort due to increased water vapour.

Daytime temperatures are expected to remain nearly constant, with a slight drop in night-time temperatures.

In the subsequent 24 hours from Tuesday evening, rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are forecast for two locations in Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, accompanied by scattered hail in some areas. Elsewhere, the weather is anticipated to remain predominantly dry with partly cloudy skies, and temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable across the country.
