Cyclone Hamoon makes landfall in Bangladesh

C T Online Desk: The highly severe cyclonic storm Hamoon began its landfall along the Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong coasts at 6pm on Tuesday.

Cyclone Hamoon hit the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar coastline, with wind speeds of approximately 80km/h, showing signs of weakening.

It is expected that the center of Cyclone Hamoon will reach the coast around 9pm.

According to a special bulletin issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the very severe cyclonic storm is currently positioned approximately 285 kilometres southwest of Chittagong port, 250 kilometres southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 235 kilometres south of Mongla port, and 180 kilometres south of Payra port.

The bulletin forecast says: “The cyclone is likely to continue moving east-northeastwards and gradually weaken into a cyclonic storm, potentially making landfall on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar coast within tonight. The core of the system may begin crossing the coast between 6pm and 9pm.”

The storm caused a blackout in Cox’s Bazar after bearing down on the coast on Tuesday evening.

The cyclonic storm has already uprooted a substantial number of trees along the Cox’s Bazar coast.

Our correspondent in Cox’s Bazar has reported that the severe storm has caused significant damage to numerous small shops located near the beach area.
