Chittagong flood: Bus services halted, road communication snapped

C T Online Desk: The road communication between Khagrachhari, Rangamati, and Chittagong has been cut off as the Chittagong-Hathazari road is now closed due to flooding, caused by heavy rainfall.

Earlier in the day, vehicles departing from Chittagong city Khagrachhari, and Rangamati managed to reach some destinations, but several vehicles were reportedly stranded due to the rising water, leading to significant traffic congestion.

In response to this, the associations of vehicle owners have suspended bus operations until the water subsides to avert any potential mishaps.

Confirming the matter, Kamrul Azam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Raozan highway police station, said: “The highway in Nandirhat and Bara Dighi areas of Hathazari is inundated due to heavy rainfall, making it impossible for traffic to move.”

Md Shahjahan, joint secretary of the Chittagong Road Transport Owner Group, said: “Typically, our buses operate from Chittagong city to Khagrachhari and North Chittagong. However, with the water levels rising in the Nandirhat area this morning, our vehicles are unable to traverse. To ensure safety, we’ve suspended bus services until further notice.”

Meanwhile, Md Hasan, the publicity secretary of Chittagong Rangamati Motor Owners Association, said: “While some buses departing from Chittagong city for Rangamati managed to cross, the majority of them got stranded. Consequently, we have advised our drivers to halt operations until the water recedes.”
