C T Online Desk: Aug 15, 2023- People of Chattogram city and its adjacent areas today observed National Mourning Day and 48th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with due respect and solemnity.
Apart from Chattogram city, north and south district units of Awami League (AL) and its front organisations, Chattogram City Corporation, Metropolitan and district police, different socio-cultural organisations, district administration, educational institutions, professional bodies, different government departments chalked out various programmes to observe the day.
The day’s programmes started with hoisting of national flags at half-mast atop of all the public, semi-government, autonomous, educational institutions and private buildings in the city and district, placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu and holding discussion meeting.
Wearing black badges, officials, political leaders, freedom fighters, heads of different organizations, institutions and departments and commoners placed wreaths at the Mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the morning.
The day’s programmes also included milad mahfil, food distribution, screening documentary and holding special prayers in mosque and others religious institutions, poetry recitation, essay and quiz competitions on the life and works of Bangabandhu, exhibition of films, playing of the historic March 7 speeches of Bangabandhu in 41 wards of the city corporation, tree plantation and blood donation.
Hundreds of AL workers gathered at the party office in the morning to place wreaths on the portrait of Bangabandhu.
Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) observed the day through various programmes including doa and milad mahfil, discussions at 41 wards, hoisting of national flag at half-mast at its all ward offices, poetry recitations and essay competitions at all schools and colleges.
Chattogram city, north and south district AL chalked out elaborate programmes at ward, upazila and union levels, which included discussions on the life and works of Bangabandhu.
Chattogram district administration observed the day through various programmes including doa and milad mahfil, discussion meeting, hoisting of national flag at half-mast at all public and private offices, poetry recitations and essay competitions at all schools and colleges.
Later, a discussion meeting on “life and ideals of Bangabandhu” was held at Shilpakala auditorium with deputy commissioner Abul Bashar Md Fakruzzaman in the chair.
Md Tofail Islam, Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram, paid homage to Father of the Nation by placing wreaths at his portrait on the Shilpakala Academy premises at 9 am. At that time, a vigilante team of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) played a bugle.
Md Tofail Islam addressed the discussion meeting as chief guest while Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Krisnapada Roy, Deputy Inspector General of Police Nur-E-Alam Mina, Commander of Chattogram City Muktijudda Sangsad Command Mozaffar Ahmed, high officials of district administration and divisional commissioner office spoke on the occasion.
Different district level government officers, public representatives, political leaders, the local elite and heads of different educational institutions and socio-cultural organizations participated the discussion meeting.
Documentary films on Bangabandhu on his historic March 7 speech were screened at important places in the city and district.
Islamic Foundation organised programmes including recitation from the Holy Qur’an, Doa mehfil and a discussion on the life and works of the father of the nation at its Andarkillah office premises n the city.
Improved diets were served to the inmates of hospitals, Chattogram jail, shishu paribars, vagabond centres, orphanages and shelter homes of the old age people.
Chattogram University (CU), Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Chattogram Press Club, Chattogram Union of Journalists, Chattogram University Veterinary and Animal Science University (CVASU), University of Chattogram Science and Technology (USTC), Judges of Chattogram court, Chattogram Divisional Sports Organisations and different colleges and private universities organised separate programmes marking the day.
Besides, Chattogram Zilla Parisad, city units of Bangladesh Communist Party, Gono Forum, Sector Commanders’ Forum, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Civil Surgeon office in Chattogram, Bangabandhu Parishad Chattogram, Sheikh Rasel Smriti Parishad, Greater Chattogram Development Action Council, Projonmo-71, Chattogram College, Chattogram Education Board and Shahid Smriti Pathagar also arranged different programmes.
