C T Online Desk: After 34 years, Chittagong Chamber President Mahbubul Alam has been elected as the third business leader from Chittagong as the president of the country’s leading business organization. Earlier in the seventies industrialist AM Zahir Uddin Khan became the president of FBCCI as Chittagong Chamber President. Industrialist Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was elected FBCCI president for the second time from Chittagong in 1989. Business leader Mahbubul Alam became FBCCI president for the third time from Chittagong after almost three decades . He will lead the FBCCI for the term 2023–25.
Election Board Chairman A Matin Chowdhury announced the name of the new president at a function at the FBCCI building in Motijheel on Wednesday. At that time two other members of the election board Shamchul Alam and MN Manjurul Haque were present. Also present was the current president of FBCCI. Jasim Uddin and former president Sheikh Fazle Fahim.
Chairman of Election Board A Matin Chowdhury announced the name of Amin Helali, the representative of Bangladesh Textbook Printing and Marketing Association, as the senior vice-president. Besides, the names of six vice-presidents including three from the chamber group and three from the association group were announced. Among them, Khairul Huda Chapal, Mohammad Anwar Sadat Sarkar and Yashoda Jeeban Debnath were elected as vice-presidents from the Chamber group. Shami Kaiser, Rashedul Hossain Chowdhury Roni and Munir Hossain have become vice presidents from the association group.
Mahbubul Alam served as Chittagong Chamber Director for the first time in 2002–2004, 2nd time in 2005–2006, Vice President in 2007–2008, Senior Vice President in 2011–2012 and President for the 5th time since 2013.
Mahbubul Alam was born in 1958 in Dalinagar village under Raujan Upazila of Chittagong. He is the eldest son of the renowned businessman and social worker late Nurul Alam and late Anwara Begum. Mahbubul Alam, who received his master’s degree from the Department of Sociology of Chittagong University, served as the social welfare secretary of CUCSU during his studies. After completing his education, he established himself as one of the leading traders in the import of consumer goods by engaging in multi-faceted business including import-export. He is the country’s leading business organization Alam Trading Corporation, Proprietor of M. Alam Gas Station, Chairman of Surgi Scope Hospital, Vice Chairman of Bengal Commercial Bank and Star Allied Ventures, Managing Director of C-Bay Ltd. and Ex-Chairman of Diamond Insurance and Ex-Vice-Chairman of Asia Insurance.
Apart from being involved in various social and service activities, Mahbubul Alam has served as the former Vice-President of The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, CIRC Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Chairman of Business Initiative Leading Development (BILD). Chairman of Bangladesh Center of Excellence (BCE), Vice-Chairman of Confederation of Eastern Chambers of Commerce and Industries (CECCI), Governing Board member of Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) under Prime Minister’s Office Member and Board Member of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and Director of International Chamber of Commerce Bangladesh, currently serving as Executive Board Member of Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute. Apart from this, Chittagong University Alumni Association General Secretary, Vice President of the Board of Directors of Alia Madrasa Raujan , as the President of the Board of Directors of Dalinagar High School. Philanthropist and enthusiast for leaning Mahbubul Alam is involved in numerous educational and social organizations including being a member of the governing body of Chittagong Mahila College and Gahira Alia Madrasa.
Deputy Minister of Education Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Naufel congratulated Mahbubul Alam for being elected as the President of The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) for the term 2023-25. In his greeting message, the Deputy Education Minister said, Mahbubul Alam is leading the Chittagong Chamber with great efficiency and integrity. Under his able leadership the Chittagong Chamber reached unique heights. On behalf of the Board of Directors of Chittagong Chamber Senior Vice-President Tarafdar Md. Ruhul Amin and Vice President Syed Mohammad Tanveer congratulated and wished Mahbubul Alam in separate messages.
