Police must play a leading role in ensuring road safety: CMP Commissioner

C T Online Desk: Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Krishna Pad Roy said that the police must play a leading role in ensuring road safety.He said this while inaugurating the road policing leadership training workshop with CMP officials at Radisson Blu Hotel in the city on Tuesday (July 4).He said, ‘Police must play a leading role to ensure road safety. But it is not possible for the police alone to implement it.For this all the concerned parties have to work together. ‘At this time, the CMP Commissioner thanked GRSP and BIGRS for organizing the training workshop aimed at increasing the capacity of the police.Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) has organized a two-day workshop for the first time in Chittagong to increase the capacity of the police to ensure safe roads.

As part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) programme, GRSP will train a total of 76 officers, including 38 from CMP, on road policing over two days.

GRSP Senior Road Policing Adviser Russell Naiman conducted the training workshop. He has worked for more than 30 years in various positions in the UK Police. The workshop emphasizes the ability of police personnel to deal with road safety hazards as per the globally practiced ‘Safe Systems Approach’.

This training will enable police officers to learn about international and national road policing techniques and reduce road-collision deaths and injuries by enforcing traffic laws more effectively.

Traffic Sergeants, Sub-Inspectors, Police Inspectors, Assistant Commissioners of Police and Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police participated in the workshop. Also, four engineers of Chittagong City Corporation and two officers of BRTA participated as trainees.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Faisal Mahmood, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) ASM Mahtab Uddin and Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration and Finance) MA Masud were special guests at the workshop. Among others present were GRSP Asia-Pacific Region Manager Brat Harman and BIGRS Chittagong Initiative Coordinator Labib Tazwan Utsav, Enforcement Coordinator Kazi Helal Uddin, Surveillance Coordinator Kazi Saifun Newaz, Transport Coordinator Mahiyat Hasna were present on the occasion., CMP sources said.
