MITU MURDER : Ex-SP Babul, six others charged

C T Online Desk: A Chattogram court on Monday framed charges against former superintendent of police Babul Akter and six others in the case Babul filed for the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016.

Additional metropolitan sessions judge Md Jashim Uddin charged seven of the murder, destroying evidence and abatement, said Chattogram metropolitan public prosecutor Md Abdur Rashid.

The court also posted for April 9 the formal commencement of the trial with recording testimonies of prosecution witnesses.

Babul’s lawyer Shishir Monir, however, said that they would appeal to the High Court against the framing of charges rejecting Babul’s application seeking his discharge from the case.

Earlier on September 13, 2022, the Police Bureau of Investigation submitted the charge sheet against the seven people—Babul, Kamrul Islam Sikdar alias Musa, 40, Ehteshamul Hoque alias Haniful Hoque alias Bhola, 41, Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, 27, Md Anwar Hossain, 28, Md Khairul Islam alias Kalu, 28, and Shahjahan Mia, 28.

Of the seven accused, Babul,  Motaleb Mia, Anwar Hossain and Shahjahan Mia are in jail while Kamrul Islam Sikdar alias Musa and Khairul Islam alias Kalu are still in hiding while Ehteshamul Hoque alias Bhola is on bail.

Babul’s wife Mitu was stabbed and shot to death on June 5, 2016, when she was taking their son to a school bus at the port city’s GEC crossing.

Babul filed the murder case with the Panchlaish police station against unnamed people.

The PBI submitted the final report on May 12, 2021 in the case filed by Babul Akter in 2016, mentioning him as the ‘mastermind’ of the murder as the investigators claimed to have found his involvement in his wife’s murder.

On May 12, 2021, Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain filed a fresh case accusing Babul of the murder. The PBI on January 25, 2022 submitted its final report in the case filed by Mitu’s father.

On January 9, 2022, following an order of additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Abdul Halim, Babul was shown arrested in the case he filed.
