‘Moscow to stay beside Dhaka despite sanctions’

C T Online Desk: Russia wants to continue cooperation with Bangladesh, particularly in the areas of trade and economy and in implementing the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, despite sanctions imposed against Russia by the US and the “collective West”.

Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Alexander Mantytskiy, said this during a meeting with Jatiya Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday, according to a statement of the Russian embassy.

The project faced troubles because of disruptions in the supply chains and financial transactions following the western sanctions imposed against Russia for invading Ukraine more than a year back.

Even, Bangladesh banned 69 US-sanctioned Russian ships from entering its territory. Dhaka also had to refuse one such sanctioned ship, which was carrying equipment for the nuclear power plant, to anchor in Bangladesh.

Later, Bangladeshi vessels carried the equipment from the Russian ship that stopped in the Bay of Bengal.

During the meeting with the Speaker Shirin Sharmin, Alexander Mantytskiy said they spoke of mutual commitment to strengthen friendly relations between the parliaments of Russia and Bangladesh, including under the auspices of the relevant friendship groups established for exchange of the best practices of national legislation.
