C T Online Desk: Two persons including a contractor were killed as the rooftop of an under-demolition old building collapsed in the port city’s Jamalkhan area on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased are Mohammad Jashim Uddin, 33, son of Abdul Khalek, in Datmara area under Fatikchari, and Rana Chakraborty, 57, son of Dulal Chakraborty, in Kaliaish area in Satkania upazila of Chattogram, said Md Jahidul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.
The accident occurred as the rooftop of the old building, owned by one Ratan, collapsed on the road at about 4:00pm, leaving Jashim Uddin dead on the spot and Rana Chakroborty injured, the OC said.
Rana succumbed to his injuries at about 8:00pm at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said Atanu Chakroborty, assistant commissioner (Kotwali zone) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
Jashim Uddin was a contractor for demolishing the building while Rana Chakroborty was a pedestrian, he said.
The bodies were recovered and sent to the hospital morgue, said OC Jahidul.
Md Shahidul Islam, senior station officer of Chandanpura fire station in Chattogram, said that the building was being demolished while a portion of it collapsed on the adjacent road leading to the accident.
