CU journalism students boycott classes, tests

C T Online Desk: Students of journalism at the Chittagong University went on an indefinite boycott of classes and exams from today protesting a group of Chhatra League activists’ threatening of a fellow student.

The students announced the programme from a demonstration in front of the administration building on campus around 11:30am, reports our CU correspondent.

Teachers of the department also joined the demonstration.

Farhana Akter, a student of masters at the department, said, “We can’t go back to classes as our friend (Marjan) is not safe on campus. We demand justice as soon as possible.”

Ar Raji, assistant professor of the department, said the incident is not only condemnable but also intimidating. The safety of a university student’s life is the first priority. We demand safety for Marjan Akter.”

Assistant Proctor Shahidul Islam said they have already formed a probe body to look into the matter and will prepare a report as soon as possible.

Several Chhatra League men allegedly intercepted Marjan Akter, also CU correspondent of Daily Samakal, on campus on February 9 and asked her to delete footage of Fine Arts students’ demonstration on campus the same day. The Chhatra League men issued threats.

Meanwhile, Chhatra League central committee expelled Maruf Islam, joint secretary of CU unit Chhatra League, for his alleged involvement in the matter, CU Chhatra League President Rejaul Haque Rubel said.
