Remarks on PM: Rajbari woman walks out of jail after 4 months

C T Online Desk: Rajbari Blood Donors Club founder and Mohila Dal leader Sonia Akhter Smriti, who had been arrested on charges of spreading rumours about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media, has been released on bail following four months in jail.

She was released on bail from Rajbari District Jail on Thursday evening.

Sonia Akhter Smriti said: “I had to spend four months in jail leaving my two innocent children for the crime of telling the truth. I have no regrets. Because I know, people of Bangladesh were by my side and I can serve four years in jail for my party.”

Her father Abdul Sattar Malik rejoiced at the release of his daughter.

In a raid in the early hours of October 5, 2022, the law enforcement agency arrested Sonia Akhter Smriti at her home in Beradanga under Rajbari municipality.

According to the police, Shamsul Arefin Chowdhury, science and technology affairs secretary of the ruling Awami League’s Mijanpur union unit, filed a case against Smriti at Rajbari Sadar police station.

According to the case statement, Smriti made false and defamatory statements on social media on August 31 to tarnish the prime minister’s reputation. Smriti went live on Facebook before her arrest and was heard talking to policemen.
