C T Online Desk: The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) wants to make all the markets in the city polythene free as the pilot project has got ‘success’ in three markets. It will be effective from February 15. City Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury will inaugurate the program on February 10 at Reazuddin Bazar. Earlier, the campaign would be run in the markets till that day.
According to CCC sources, there are 25 listed markets in 41 wards of the city. CCC has already declared three of these markets free of polythene. The polythene-free market was inaugurated on November 29. CCC has been operating mobile courts in the markets since December 1. The markets are Kazir Dewri, Karnafuli Market and Chawkbazar Raw Market.
CCC Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury and CCC Environmental Development Standing Committee Chairman Shaibal Das Sumon claimed that the markets have been cleared of garbage. Therefore, initiatives have been taken to make the remaining markets polythene free.
Meanwhile, city Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury held a meeting with the representatives of the concerned market committee on Wednesday to make the remaining 22 markets polythene free. It has been decided that all the markets will be polythene free from February 15.
