C T Online Desk:At the beginning of the new year, there is an air of relief in the revenue department of Chittagong City Corporation. Due to the movement of taxpayers at the beginning of the levy of taxes as per the enhanced assessment, the corporation was in dire straits in revenue collection.
However, the final assessment of the house tax is determined according to the opinion of the taxpayers through an appeal hearing in the presence of the mayor. This increases the interest of taxpayers in determining tax by participating in appeal hearings. Yesterday morning, the appeal hearing was held in Ward No. 2, 7 and 8 under the jurisdiction of Chittagong Shopping Complex Revenue Circle 1 at Gate No. 2 of the city. 232 people participated in the public hearing and expressed their satisfaction on the final assessment. At this time, the chief guest said the city mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said, after taking charge, I said that the burden of additional house tax will not be imposed on the city dwellers. In the previous year 2017, five-year house tax was reassessed as per rules. I was not in charge of the mayor at that time. The implementation of household assessment was suspended in 2017 as a result of urban residents’ agitation.About a year and a half after I took office, the government lifted the moratorium on house tax. As a result, we witnessed massive inconsistencies in the implementation of house tax revaluation 2017. Therefore, to remove the confusion and dissatisfaction of the tax payers, I constituted the Board of Appeals and subsequently took the initiative of public hearing in person. Tax payers are satisfied and confusion is also removed. He appealed to the residents of the city not to panic and participate in the public hearing.
