President, PM greet members of police on police week

C T Online Desk: Jan 2, 2023- President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today greeted all the members of Bangladesh Police on the occasion of the Police Week-2023 beginning tomorrow.

On the eve of the week, they issued separate messages wishing success of all the programmes of the week.

President Abdul Hamid in his message said, “Bangladesh Police is a traditional organization of the country in maintaining country’s internal security and law and order.”

Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman called for independence in the early hours of March 26, 1971 and later, responding to his call, members of the Bangladesh Police at Rajarbagh Police Lines build the first armed resistance against the Pakistani Hanadar Bahani, he said.

He said Bangladesh Police have been playing very important and praiseworthy role in maintaining law and order upholding the spirit of discipline, security and progress. The role of police has been acclaimed globally in curbing militancy and terrorism, he said, adding that Bangladesh has become role model in the world for its role in eliminating terrorism.

The president recalled with deep respect the heroic members of the police who sacrificed their lives for the welfare of the people as well as the country.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh Police has been working tirelessly to maintain internal peace, curb crime and establish rule of law.

Immediately after the independence, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had taken various initiatives for building a people’s friendly, modern, skilled and professional police force, she said, adding that Bangabandhu increased salary of police at that critical time, reestablished 82 destroyed police stations and recruited women police in 1974.

After returning to power in 1996, she said the Awami League government took a number of measures for modernization of police and for the first time a woman police officer was promoted to the post of district police super. Budget of police was increased, risk allowance was introduced, she said, adding that Taka 5 crore was given as seed-money to Police Welfare Trust. Besides, police college and community police were established.

Besides, the brave members of the Bangladesh Police have made significant and commendable contributions through their active participation in UN peacekeeping operations, she said.

After formation of the Awami League government, the manpower of Bangladesh Police has been increased in phases, she said, adding that the government is working to promote and enhance the ranks of the police in order to achieve professional excellence.

“I hope that every member of Bangladesh Police will carry out their duties with efficiency, professionalism and impartiality upholding the spirit of Liberation War and patriotism. I believe that you all will work ceaselessly to build Bangladesh police as ‘people’s police’ as expected by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” she said.

Both the president and the premier wished the overall success of all the programs of ‘Police Week-2023’.
