C T Online Desk: Motorcycles and three-wheelers cannot be driven through the under-construction tunnel under the Karnaphuli river in Chittagong. The Bangladesh Bridge Authority has shown this in a proposed list of what kind of vehicles will run in the tunnel and how much will be the toll. Road Transport and Bridge Minister Obaidul Quader approved the toll rate proposed by the bridge authority on December 20. Now it is awaiting the approval of the Ministry of Finance.
An official of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority told the media that the movement of motorcycles and three-wheelers inside the tunnel is not considered for now. Therefore, the issue of toll collection for these two types of vehicles has not been kept in the toll rate determination list. Mainly for the safety of the tunnel such vehicles are not allowed.
Karnaphuli Tunnel Project Director Harunur Rashid Chowdhury said that the construction of the South Tunnel (tube) between the two tubes or tunnels of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong has been completed. This tunnel starts from Anwara end of Chittagong to Patenga end of the city. It is now ready for traffic. Work on North Tunnel (Patenga to Anwara-bound) is also nearing completion. After its completion, the tunnel will be opened for traffic.
