C T Online Desk: Bijoy Das, a valiant freedom fighter struggling with poverty at Baria village of Gazipur Sadar upazila in outskirts of capital Dhaka, cannot sleep in winter night.
The dilapidated house allows cold wind inside battering Bijoy pushing his sufferings to the climax although the person once contributed a lot to the country’s liberation, braving the wrath of Pakistani occupation forces.
To reduce suffering of the freedom fighter, the country’s largest business conglomerate Bashundhara Group gifted him with a newly-made paved house.
Das along with his wife Gita Rani Das was passing difficult life in the rundown house as he was unable to make a house on his land.
Getting the information, Shuvoshangho, a social organisation of the Kaler Kantho, the Group’s reputed Bengali daily, came forward and took initiatives to build a paved house with two rooms on his two kathas of land.
Imdadul Haq Milan, Editor-in-Chief of Kaler Kantho, handed over the key of the house to Bijoy and his wife Gita on Friday.
Haider Ali, Deputy Editor of Kaler Kantho, Md Akram Hossain, chief advisor of Gazipur Shuvosangho, and Md Jakaria Zaman, central director, among others, were present at the event.
Imdadul Haq said, “Valiant freedom fighters like Bijoy Das made the country free from enemies and achieved independence during liberation war in 1971. We should not forget their contribution. We are very happy to make a house for him in December, the Month of Victory. Bashundhara Group also wants to stand beside more poor freedom fighters like Bijoy Das.”
“From now, we will be able to sleep in our own house without any tension. We had to suffer during natural disaster. It was beyond imagination that I will get a house. I am very happy to get it. My family members are very grateful to Chairman of Bashundhara Group Ahmed Akbar Sobhan for the magnanimity. I pray to Almighty for wellbeing and prosperity for him. I am also showing my gratitude to Shuvoshangho for assisting us,” said Bijoy Das, getting the house.
