C T Online Desk: Ctg Finally, the process of loading large ships at the jetty of Chittagong port is starting. After a survey report prepared by a foreign organization, an initiative has been taken to ship 200 meters long and 10 meters draft ships.
The trial run will be completed within a week. After the trial run, the process of berthing large ships will begin at the port. It will have a positive impact on the country’s import-export trade and will save billions of dollars in the transportation sector. According to the sources, the jetty of Chittagong Port can currently accommodate ships with a draft of 9.5 meters and a length of 190 meters. Vessels of the above draft and length anchored in the port from January 2015.
Earlier, smaller ships used to come to the port. Congestion of relatively small ships increases the cost of transporting goods. Again, many ships in the world’s shipping sector cannot come to the port. In the existing situation, those involved in the shipping business and import-export trade in Chittagong have been demanding to increase the length and draft of the port for a long time. But the port authorities did not suddenly decide to increase the draft without being sure. A decision was taken to conduct a survey through an organization specializing in the matter.
In the light of this decision, HR Welling Port of London commissioned a research institute to study the Karnaphuli River and the harbor channel. They researched three issues. At present, the condition of the channel and the way the jetty is, exactly how many draft and length ships can be loaded in the port, how much space on the two banks of the port can be used for jetty or yard expansion and if any special measures are taken, the maximum number of draft and length ships can be loaded in the port.
