Bata, Samsung showrooms burnt in Ctg fire

C T Online Desk: A fire that broke out on early Wednesday in Chawkbazar area in Chattogram burnt the showrooms of Bata and Samsung. A branch of Social Islami Bank Limited and a residential hotel were also damaged in the fire.

The fire broke out at the Bata showroom at about 12:15am, said Abdul Malek, assistant director of Chattogram fire service and civil defense.

Six vehicles from three fire stations rushed to the spot and doused the fire at about 4:30am, he said.

‘The fire originated at the Bata showroom on the ground floor and later it engulfed the adjacent Samsung showroom and other businesses at the building. The Bata showroom was completely damaged in the fire,’ he said.

The cause and damage of the fire could be known after investigation, he added.

Norottom Kumar Das, manager of the Bata showroom, told New Age that they closed the showroom at about 10:00pm on Tuesday. Two hours later, they were informed about the fire incident.

‘The products and furniture have been completely damaged by the fire. The estimated loss caused by the fire is worth around Tk 1 crore,’ he said.

Md Akhtaruzzaman, senior officer of Social Islami Bank Limited, told New Age that the bank was partially damaged by the fire.

‘No important documents were affected in the fire. Only the signboard and front side have been burnt in the fire,’ he said, adding that the banking services at the branch would remain suspended on Wednesday.
