Rohingya woman killed, security official hurt in Bandarban no man’s land firing

C T Online Desk: A Rohingya woman was killed while a security official has reportedly been injured during an infighting between security forces and Rohingya insurgent groups in Konapara Rohingya camp, no man’s land in Naikhyangchhari of Bandarban on Monday.

The deceased could not be identified yet.

The RAB official Sohel Barua, 30, in a serious condition, was taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital on Monday night.

Resident Medical Officer of Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital Mohammad Ashiqur Rahman said that a RAB member with a serious head injury was brought to the emergency department of Sadar Hospital around 9:45pm. He was bleeding profusely. Doctors are continuing to treat him.

Although no official statement was yet made from RAB, many RAB members were seen waiting inside and outside the Sadar Hospital in Cox’s Bazar.

Officials from RAB-15 in Cox’s Bazar conducted a raid at the border area on Monday evening to prevent smuggling, and the member was injured when the insurgent groups started firing at RAB officials, sources inside police said.

Ghumdhum union parishad Chairman Jahangir Aziz and Naikhangchori police station duty officer Assistant Sub Inspector Joydeb confirmed the news of a gunfight at the Konapara area, however they did not confirm details of the incident.

Bandarban’s Assistant Superintendent of Police M Salah Uddin said they were looking into the matter.

The incident comes at a time when a travel ban is ongoing in four upazilas of Bandarban till November 16 due to the joint operation of the security forces in the border areas.

The ban on tourist travel, imposed in Ruma and Rowangchari upazilas on October 17 and in Thanchi and Alikadam upazilas on October 23, has recently been extended till November 16

The ban was imposed after Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on October 20 arrested 10 suspected militants and separatists along with a large cache of firearms and ammunition after conducting an operation in the remote areas of Bandarban and Rangamati.
