Tidal water causes loss of crores of taka in Chaktai-K’ganj

C T Online Desk: Tidal water in storage warehouse of Khatunganj, loss of hundreds of crores of taka In Chittagong’s Chaktai-Khatunganj, the country’s largest consumer goods wholesale market, stores  and warehouses have been damaged by rising tides due to impact of cyclone Sitrang and inclement weather.

Businessmen claim that hundreds of crores worth of products have been wasted. The traders said that due to the cyclone and new moon, the water level has increased in the tide and several areas including Khatunganj have submerged. Tidal water has entered Chaktai, Khatunganj and Achadganj through Chaktai and Rajakhali.

As a result, there has been extensive damage to the goods in the shops and warehouses. Especially picky eaters worried about turmeric, ginger, onion, garlic. A fair price cannot be obtained even if the products are dried. They also said that the area is being sluiced, the project is going on, but no benefit is being seen. There is no outlet for rain and tidal water. Flooded areas are flooded by the garbage coming up from the drains along with tidal water.

Due to this, the residents along with the businessmen of the area also suffered. General Secretary of Khatunganj Hamidullah Mia Market Traders Association Idris Ali said, 3-4 sacks of ginger, onion, garlic and turmeric were soaked in the tidal water. All traders are in the same situation. All in all, our goods worth hundreds of crores of taka were lost in one night.
