C T Online Desk: Due to lack of control in industrial waste management, water and environment pollution of Karnaphuli river is exceeding the level.
Textile sector organizations are at the top of the list of environmental pollution. Liquid waste from unlicensed small factories in particular has created a major crisis. Besides, the environmentalists said that ammonia gas is produced from the garbage of the poultry farm and the environment is being polluted the most.
Due to pollution, the survival of the aquatic animals of the Karnaphuli river is at risk. According to the sources of the Department of Environment, those who work with permission from the Department of Environment, including large industrial factories in Chittagong city, are always monitored.
But there are many companies, which are running factories in different areas of the city without any approval. ETP is not used in unauthorized institutions. As a result, the liquid waste is entering the river through drains or canals. .
A study on the Karnaphuli river, led by Mohammad Omar Farooq, conducted by Effective Creation on Human Opinion (ECO), said that around 89 sources from the Bay of Bengal estuary to Kaptai are responsible for river pollution. This includes 53 industries, 14 boat repair shops along with markets, canals, farms, shutki palli. Most of them are located from the mouth of the sea to Kalurghat Bridge. The study identified 75 sources of water and air pollution.
