C T Online Desk: Locals and tourists enjoyed the first day of the Sharadiya Durga Puja in Cox’s Bazar city and other upazilas on Saturday amid joy and festivity.

This year, the idol worshiping is being held in total 305 temples and pavilions in the district, including one in a Rohingya camp of Ukhiya Upazila. In Cox’s Bazar Municipality, 11 idol worship and 10 Ghat Puja have been organized this year.

The government has allocated 153 tons of rice for the 305 pavilions in the district.

The grand festival of Hindus will end with the emersion of idols on October 5.

Security concerns

Based on a list of 18 vulnerable pavilions prepared by the District Puja Celebration Council, the police have installed CCTV cameras and increased security arrangements to ensure a safe and joyous celebration.

The organizers fear that unpleasant incidents may happen this year due to rise in crimes by Rohingya miscreants, juvenile gangs, muggers and fanatics.

The vulnerable Puja mandaps are situated in three upazilas of the district, including seven in Ukhiya.

President of District Puja Celebration Committee Ujjal Kar said volunteers will work alongside the law enforces at the mandaps.

Cox’s Bazar Police Superintendent Md Mahfuzul Islam said that they were working on this matter seriously. “All preparations have been made to avoid any untoward incident during the Durga Puja,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
