C T Online Desk: Different parts of Cox’s Bazar beach are disappearing due to rough tide and waves. The sand of the beach is constantly breaking. Locals said that the erosion has mainly occurred since the water development board started providing geo bags filled with sand.
Last Friday (August 12), Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources Kabir bin Anwar went to see the erosion situation. At that time, the locals pointed out the waste of lakhs of taka in the name of preventing erosion with geo-bags along with sand extraction from the beach with dredgers. Kabir bin Anwar said to the locals that they have taken temporary measures to prevent erosion by throwing sand-filled bags.
A very high embankment is needed here. We have already submitted a project worth Tk 3,140 crore to ECNEC There will be a permanent defense embankment from Nazirertek to Marine Drive. Then maybe Cox’s Bazar will be saved from the erosion of the sea. Kabir Bin Anwar visited Kavita Chatar Beach, Kalatali Point, Labani and Sugandha Beach.
The erosion has reached up to the open stage constructed by the district administration at the Labani point of the beach. In some places, the Water Development Board has tried to prevent erosion with geobags filled with sand but to no avail. Several Geo bags at Laboni Point were torn by the waves. The tourist police helpdesk in that area will also disappear under the river any time.
