C T Online Desk: Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL), a state-owned fertilizer factory in Chittagong, has closed prduction due to gas shortage. Production at CUFL resumed last Sunday (July 17) night after a one-week shutdown due to mechanical problems. Less than two days later, on Tuesday (July 19) at 8:30 pm, production suspended again.
According to CUFL officials, the urea and ammonia plants require 47 million cubic feet of gas per day for full production. 47 million cubic feet of gas is supplied daily from Karnaphuli Gas Systems Limited (KGSL). If the production of fertilizers is stopped, there is a loss of more than a quarter of 2 crore taka every day. If the factory is operational, 1 thousand 700 metric tons of fertilizer can be produced daily.
The latest production is about 1200 metric tons of fertilizer. The CUFL factory was opened from midnight on February 20 this year after being closed for about two and a half months. CUFL Managing Director Engineer. Aktaruzzaman said that the production has been stopped due to reduced gas pressure.
