C T Online Desk: The signboard of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will be seen as soon as you enter the Fishery Ghat of the city. It is written there – fishing in the sea is completely prohibited for 65 days from May 20 to July 23.
But Jatka(Small Hilsha) is being sold in violation of this ban.
Killing Jatka is a punishable offense under the Fisheries Act of Bangladesh. Earlier the size of Jatka was 9 inches. Recently that size has been increased by one inch. If the size of small hilsa is less than 10 inches, then the fisherman will be punished for catching jatka. Dealers and traders will be fined for selling and storing.
On Monday (July 18) Jatka is sold in full swing at Fisari Ghat of the city from dawn till morning. The fishes come from Anwara, Banshkhali and Maheshkhali. Jatka is being sold openly in various fish markets of Chittagong. Despite regular raids and surveillance by the administration and fisheries department, the catching and selling of jatka is not stopped.BN-18
